  1. Brighton Marathon Runners 2010

    February 22, 2010 by admin

We would like to say a big thank you to all of our runners that took part in the Brighton Marathon 2010.

10 year old Preston Freeman ran the Grand Hotel Mini Mile in aid of our charity. Preston was born with congenital heart defects and wasn’t expected to survive. After undergoing numerous operations he now lives a relatively normal life; what better way to demonstrate the fantastic work carried out then to see him cross the finish line.

Preston is pictured below the the Mayor of Brighton and Hove Ann Norman

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all for running the Brighton Marathon 2010 in support of the Sussex Heart Charity.

We now have a cardiac service that provides better treatment and better and faster recovery for cardiac patients

Your efforts have raised an amazing £9,200 and the money is still coming in,

Well done to you all and thank you once again for your invaluable support

  2. £28,500 Research grant approved

    February 11, 2010 by admin

The Sussex Heart Charity has recently approved a request from Cardiac Surgeon Mr Michael Lewis for £28,500 to fund the following research project as discribed by Mr Lewis.

”This study is about trying to improve the treatment of patients undergoing coronary artery surgery. To perform this heart operation often requires the help of a heart-lung machine, which supports your body’s circulation whilst the surgeon bypasses the diseased blood vessels. During the surgery, the heart has to be protected so that it is not injured by the strain of the operation. Despite using standard techniques to protect the heart, some temporary injury still occurs from which the heart gradually recovers during the first few hours and days following the operation. This study looks to improve on these established ‘protective techniques’ by preparing the heart before surgery with a drug that switches the fuel of the heart from less efficient fatty acids to more efficient sugars.

This grant has allowed us to employ a research nurse to assist in patient recruitment, patient consent and data collection. We are very grateful for the continuing support of the Sussex Heart Charity, without whom this pioneering work would not be possible.
