Sussex Heart Charity Funds Life Saving Equipment at The Amex Stadium

February 8, 2012 by admin

When the new American Express Community Stadium was built we were delighted to offer to equip the stadium with 8 Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) and ongoing training for staff in basic life support and the use of the AED’s. These machines are designed to allow the general public to save lives. They are easy to use, a computer inside the AED analyses the patient’s heart rhythm and determines if a shock is required. If a shock is required, the AED uses voice instructions to guide the user through saving the person’s life.

With tens of thousands of excited spectators attending the Amex Stadium each month there is a greatly increased chance of someone having a heart attack which can lead to a cardiac arrest. This vital lifesaving equipment and training we are providing, will, without doubt lead to saving lives.

Further background and specific information: The Sussex Heart Charity over twenty five years,  has trained over 118,000 persons in vital resuscitation skills.

In 1977 the Brighton and Hove Albion football club was the first club in Europe to have paramedics on duty with vital lifesaving equipment.  A report published 1982 in the British Medical Journal highlighted a number of successful resuscitations at the Goldstone ground during a 5 year period.

Administration of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) followed by defibrillation (administration of an electric shock) is the only way to re-establish a normal heart rhythm. Every minute that the heart is not beating lowers the odds of survival by 10%. After 10 minutes without defibrillation very few people survive
